2021 Pole Barn Collapse

On Monday, February 22, 2021, at approximately 1:15 pm, the pole barn at The Valley of the Kings Sanctuary and Retreat collapsed due to the weight of the snow on the roof. Three pot belly pigs, a blind horse, and three goats were trapped inside, but thankfully, none of the animals sustained injuries beyond a few scrapes and bruises. The remainder of the barn residents – three llamas, two ponies, five cows, and two emus – were outside and are unharmed.

Sadly, the pole barn was uninsured for two reasons: the age of the structure and the fact that we are an exotic animal facility.

We have set up several fundraisers to help raise the approximate $75,000 needed to replace the barn. Please visit the pages listed below to find out how you can support the Valley of the Kings.

We have since moved the pigs and goats into the main barn and several volunteer construction crews are building emergency shelters for the cows, llamas, and Canela, our blind horse. None of the exotic animals were involved in the disaster, as they are housed in different areas of the sanctuary.

We would like to sincerely thank the Sharon & Darien Fire Departments for getting our animals safely out of the pole barn. Our farm animal vet, from Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic, has checked the animals and all are in good health.

Thank you all for your prayers and support as we scramble to recover from this huge loss.
